Creator: Smith, Kline & French Laboratories ;  Visual Projects, Ltd. ;  Jude, James R. ;  Kouwenhoven, W. B. (William Bennett), 1886-1975 ;  Knickerbocker, G. Guy ;  Thomas, Vivien T., 1910-1985.
This program demonstrates a method of applying external cardiac massage. This technique utilizes manual application of a rhythmic pressure to the patient's lower sternum with simultaneous ventilation to the lungs for the purpose of restoring artificially oxygenated blood to the head. The program employs several methods to achieve its objective of demonstrating this technique. First, external cardiac massage is demonstrated on what appears to be a plastic model of the human body. Then, two of the principal developers of the technique, Professor W. B. Kouwenhoven and Dr. James R. Jude, discuss and demonstrate external cardiac massage. Professor Kouwenhoven demonstrates successful external cardiac massage on a dog who has sustained a cardiac arrest following an electric shock whereas Dr. Jude demonstrates on two live models, a man and a woman who have not sustained cardiac arrest. Surgical technician Vivien Thomas (unidentified in the film) briefly demonstrates the dog's healthy condition following resuscitation. External cardiac massage is also demonstrated during a simulated house call for a man suffering a cardiac arrest to illustrate the technique and procedure to be followed both out of the hospital and in the emergency room. In addition, the technique is demonstrated on a doll to illustrate the proper procedure for resuscitation of a child. Moreover, external cardiac massage is demonstrated on a live child who has not sustained a cardiac arrest. Dr. Jude summarizes the results of 100 cases of cardiac arrest for which external cardiac massage is employed. Sixty-two percent of these cases are resuscitated to their pre-arrest central nervous system and cardiac status. The program concludes with an interview between Dr. Jude and a 46-year-old man who had experienced a successful resuscitation.
