This Box contains three sets of files, materials Baker used for revising The Injury Fact Book; Records from the Johns Hopkins Injury Prevention Center during the years that Baker was the Director of the center; and research files pertaining to various injury-related topics.
The materials in the front section of this box are a continuation of The Injury Fact Book, second edition, files in box 44. These materials comprise mostly data tables (printouts and hand written tables), journal articles (copies), and reports on a wide range of topics pertaining to injury and death (i.e., rates of hospitalization, leading causes of unintentional injury; choking; fractures; poisoning; aviation accidents; carbon monoxide poisoning; suffocation by infants; drowning; injury prevention knowledge among low income families; fire and burns; boating; suicide; underwater diving fatalities; farming; and occupational injuries and illnesses, by industry). Tables appear to be sorted by several variables including state, urban versus rural, income, sex, age, diagnosis, and race. Sources of statistics include the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the U. S. Coast Guard, and the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, among others. There are also a few papers and reports by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Dates: 1969; 1973; 1980-1982; 1985-1990; undated.
The second section of the box comprises records of the Johns Hopkins Injury Prevention Center. Baker was the first Director of the Injury Prevention Center, from 1987-1988, as well as the Co-director of the Center from 1988-1994. These folders include the following types of materials: correspondence and tables pertaining to salaries and raises for faculty in the Department of Health Policy and Management, including Baker; financial summaries & budgets; quarterly budget meeting agendas; research budgets; notes; sabbatical leave reports; and publications lists. There is also an 8.5 x 14 inch blueprint of the Center. Dates: 1987-1988; undated.
The third section of the box has research files on a wide range of topics. Subjects include motor vehicles (ejection; trucks; drinking and driving; foreign drivers; teen drivers); homicides; pedestrians; fires and burns; falls; aviation; the elderly; the Gulf of Mexico; rodeos; freak accidents; and Baker’s book, Injury Research: Theories, Methods, and Approaches. Documents include abstracts & literature search results (printouts); accident and death report forms; articles & reprints from journals (copies); correspondence; tables (computer printouts, hand written, and published statistics); graphs; news articles (printed from the internet source); notes; reports; copies of the Federal Register; proposals for studies by Baker; enrollment student lists; papers (studies); & presentation outlines.
