OslW, William Osler Collection in the Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions

[Series 4] Collected Notes on Medical Conditions
The majority of the Osler Papers at the Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives are notes, case histories, letters, photographs and journal articles on a vast range of diseases and medical conditions.
In addition to use by Dr. Osler and Thomas McCrae in Modern Medicine and Principles and Practices of Medicine, some of these notes may also have been used by Dr. Osler for preparation of articles and lectures. Most of the case histories are from The Johns Hopkins Hospital but a significant number are from the University of Pennsylvania, and some from England. Many are descriptions of cases from physicians who corresponded with Dr. Osler from all over the United States and England. Many letters are inquiries from patients themselves or their relatives.
The largest single section is on tuberculosis, and includes an entire box of reprints as well as the response to a survey letter that Dr. Osler sent to cities in England asking about their tuberculosis problem, record keeping, and educational programs.
The medical conditions are arranged in alphabetical order. It is advisable to consult the table of contents to Principles and Practices of Medicine to see how the various medical conditions are arranged in his book. There are many files that are on diseases and medical conditions not specifically included in his book. Some of the patients in the case histories were suffering from a variety of conditions, or from one condition arising out of another, so the disease has been put in the section which seemed most logical.
Within each diagnostic category, materials are arranged into the following sub-series: Case Histories and Patient Related Materials, Writings and Notes by Osler, Bibliographical Notes, Reprints by Others. Folders are arranged chronologically within the diagnostic sub-series.
These may have been collected by Dr. Osler himself and left at Johns Hopkins, or they may have been collected by Dr. Thomas McCrae. McCrae assisted Dr. Osler in writing his seven volume Modern Medicine. McCrae also revised Dr. Osler's Principles and Practices of Medicine through the twelve editions. From 1898-1902 McCrae reorganized the medical history files at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, which had previously been stored in the Administration Building and various other places in the hospital and at staff members' offices and private residences. He then prepared a disease index, and began the medical records system used after that.
This series contains records pertaining to patients and carries restrictions on access. Information identifying restricted documents and folders is noted on folder records throughout the series. Researchers would need to obtain individual authorizations or waivers of authorizations for access and use of protected health information and medical records. For more information about the policies and procedures for access, see Policy on Access and Use.
  • A complete bound set of the collected reprints of Dr. Osler is also available at the Medical Archives.
