Katharine Dodd was born in Providence, Rhode Island. She received her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College in 1914 and was awarded Bryn Mawr's senior European fellowship at graduation. Dodd entered Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1917 and received her M.D. in 1921. After two years of residency training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital's Harriet Lane Home, Dodd completed her training with Edwards Park at Yale University. From 1925 to 1943, she was a pediatric assistant professor and later an associate professor at Vanderbilt Medical School. She held a comparable position at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation from 1943 to 1952 before becoming professor and head of the department of pediatrics at the University of Arkansas. In August, 1957, facing mandatory retirement, Dodd became distinguished professor pediatrics at the University of Louisville Medical School. In 1961 she was appointed professor of pediatrics at Emory University, a post she held until her death.

Scope and Content
The Katharine Dodd Collection consists of letters, and a May 1962 issue of The Journal of American Pediatrics. The entire journal is dedicated to Dodd and commemorates her 70th year. All the contributors to the issue are Dodd's former students. The collection also includes a sketch of Dodd by Raymond Skip.
