Charlotte Ewell was born in Hickory Grove, Virginia. She received her nursing diploma from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1893. After graduation she served as a private duty nurse. In gratitude to her great service, George Grafflin, the father of one of her patients donated the former "Nurses' Club House" in Baltimore to the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Association. She continued to make donations to the Nurses Alumnae Association's Gate House Shop throughout her life.
