Biography

Helen Gross was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Sister of 1891 Hopkins nursing graduate Mary Gross, Helen received her nursing diploma in 1897 from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses. Following graduation, she served as head nurse in the operating room and the dispensary at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1902 to 1905 she was assistant superintendent and head nurse at Union Protestant Infirmary. In 1907 she worked for the District Visiting Nurse Association in Baltimore. In 1909 she returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital, working in the surgery operating room as head nurse and with Dr. Halsted. She resigned in 1912 to be the head of the infirmary at Princeton University, where she worked for the remainder of her career. She aided in planning the McCosh Infirmary there in 1925. She retired from active nursing in 1929. She was an active member of the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Association.
