Biography

Mary Adelaide Nutting was born in Waterloo, Quebec. She was a graduate of the first class of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. Nutting became assistant superintendent of the nursing school in 1893 and superintendent in 1894. While at Johns Hopkins, she expanded the curriculum in the school of nursing, added a preclinical training period, and established an eight-hour day for nurses. In 1907, she left Johns Hopkins to become professor of institutional administration at Columbia Teachers College and was the first woman to hold a professorship at Columbia University.

Scope and Content

The Mary Adelaide Nutting Collection covers her later professional years. It consists of correspondence and biographical material about Nutting, some produced after her death. Correspondents include Elsie Lawler (1928), Loula Kennedy (1928-1940), and Anna Wolf (1940-1943). Much of the biographical material relates to a biography of Nutting written by Helen Marshall.
